L t R: Some of the items distributed during the outreach program; organizers of the outreach program
Almost 200 graduating students participated in the extension service at St. Joseph the Worker Parish in Milaor, Camarines Sur on March 21, 2014. The students cleaned inside and outside the church. This is one of the series of activities of the graduating students other than the Holy Retreat, and Seniors’ Night among others.
Recipients of the outreach program
To make the extension service more meaningful, Batch 2014 donated 6 wall fans and cash to the parish through Rev. Fr. Muriel Abiog, the Parish Priest. One ceiling fan was likewise donated to the chapel of Lipot, Milaor, being one of the partner communities of MPC.
The parishioners are very thankful for the initiative of the 2014 graduating students inasmuch as they are currently improving the church in preparation for the Holy Week and upcoming feast of St. Joseph the Worker on May 1.
The Office of Research and Extension Services (ORES), NSTP, and Mariners’ Volunteer Organization (MVO) initiate the seminar on Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) on March 23 at the Central Bicol State University of Agriculture (CBSUA). This was conducted to create awareness on disaster and how they would prepare when it happens.
The team of experts from CBSUA shared valuable information and insights on the related concepts of changing climate and disasters. Prof. Arthur B. Estrella explained the concept of climate change and emphasized that this is brought about by the activities of man. Prof. Rene Rabacal discussed the basic concepts of Disaster risk reduction and management in simpler terms. Dr. Yolanda Agawa emphasized the Hazards, risks, capacities and vulnerabilities and contextualized them in the Bicol Region.
At the end of the day, the participants gathered sufficient information about climate change , the common disasters , the concept of risk and how to reduce it, and how to manage disasters when they happen in their own homes, school, and communities.
Sixty one (61) participants attended the one day seminar; 49 of whom were NSTP students and the rest were members of the MVO.

The participants of the Thesis Excellence Competition
To upgrade the quality of student-researches and to develop their passion for research, MPC through the Office of Research and Extension conducted the very first Thesis Excellence Award on March 11 at 9:00 in the morning.
The thesis were conducted during the first semester of A/Y 2013-2014. Five researches were presented; 2 of which were from BS Hotel and Restaurant Management, 1 from BA in Communication, and 2 in BS Business Administration. Among the entries, the 1st was the research of Donnabel A. Badiola and Rizza C. Seladis (BSHRM) entitled “Management Styles of Hotel and Restaurant Managers in Naga City” . Second was the research of Janine E. Visaya, Julyean C. Hidalgo, Kazyline Mozel L. Portugal, and Jerome J. Balacanao entitled “ Acceptability of Food Products from Squash ”. Third in rank was the study of Ma. Cecilia M. dela Cruz, Ramiro A. Rodriguez, and Ricky D. Hermogeno on the “ Training and Development of Staff: Its Impact to Customers Satisfaction of Greenwich SM Naga “. Winners received cash prize of P3,000.00, P 2,000.00, and P 1,000.00 for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prize plus a plaque for all student researchers.
Theses advisers were Dr. Marilissa J. Ampuan (1st) , Dr. Mariel R. Estrella (2nd), and Dr. Gladys G. Rosales (3rd). This year, all evaluators were researchers from the Central Bicol State University of Agriculture (CBSUA). They were Ms. Hanilyn A. Hidalgo, Ms. Mia Bella Fresnido, and Ms. Lani Abalayan.
The panel of evaluators Ms. Hanilyn, Ms. Mia and Ms. Lani.
This intellectual exercise will hopefully be a tradition in MPC as it meets the standards of student- researches in Private Higher Education Institutions (PHEIs) in the Bicol Region.
Guest Speaker Dr. Michael A. Cuesta during his introduction on Qualitative and Quantitative Research
ORES is currently nurturing the research culture in MPC. One of the regular activities is the lecture series designed to create awareness and love for research among the faculty, staff, and students. This semester, lecture series # 2 is the Qualitative and Quantitative Research Seminar. This was conducted on March 4 at 10:30 in the morning at the AVR.
Dr. Michael A. Cuesta, the Director of the Social Science Research Center of Ateneo de Naga University was the Resource Person. He highlighted the types of research, the roles of researchers, the difference between the qualitative and quantitative research, and the common tools in data gathering.
Partcipants and organizers with the Guest Speaker
The 50 participants composed of faculty and students were impressed with the lecture as this was very informative. For the students, the knowledge they gained can be used in their subject Thesis Writing/Research 1 which is offered in the first semester of the junior year. Early on, they already have the input for the subject. The faculty researchers regard the lecture as very substantive and helpful in their conduct of research.
Previous to this lecture, several lectures on research were conducted. These were the Proposal Writeshop with Dr. Yolanda L. Castroverde and the Inferential Statistics with Dr. Ma. Rowena M. Bayrante as the Resource Person.
The Quali Quanti Research seminar coincided with the 40th Anniversary of MPC.
